There are a few challenges of raising dairy cows — and farming in general — in Alaska. The biggest hurdle is the lack of resources. For example, there is no veterinarian so the family takes care of all animal care and breeding themselves.
The Plagermans also fix all the equipment when needed. And, due to limits on kinds of feed they can purchase, the family grows all the food for the cows themselves. Higher Grounds and the Buffalo Center Drive-in are using the milk in products. The glass bottles can be returned to any sales location.

The agricultural history of the area goes back to when the Franklin Roosevelt administration founded The Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation.
The Matanuska Valley project was not the only rural rehabilitation project under the administration of the Department of Interior and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. The projects were organized as colonies of families who homesteaded several areas of the country. The Matanuska Colony was made up of families who were to be relocated from the upper Midwest.
The participants in this relocation were allocated a house, 40 acres of land and the necessary tools and equipment to begin their farming adventure in Alaska. ARRC administered these long-term, low-interest loans and became the entity for managing and operating the agricultural project on behalf of the U.
